The songs of Knoxville Morning
February 22, 2012

Here’s a few words on each of the Jams. I will be including this in the press release, or something along these lines.

Its all about the Jams people……

I will have news over the next few days about our first single release.

Alphabet City

Alphabet City is about the Lower East side of Manhattan. I have always loved that moment when you come across the Williamsburg bridge and get “Spat” out straight into the East Village, and the bustle of Manhattan. Its a song about that moment when, after a few trips somewhere you realise you know a place and know where you are going. I can remember always being amazed that I could feel that way about New York City.

96-98

96-98 is the two buildings found on the cover of Led Zeppelins “Physical Graffiti”, They are located on St Marks Place in the lower east side. I love to sit around here on the steps after the boozers close and listen to music and have a few beers and an apple. Its one of my favourite spots in the city.

Baseball Song

Baseball song has nothing to do with Baseball itself, It’ll be a duet with Claire Prendergast, sort of like a Back Disco 2. Its about two people who used to be together meeting up a couple of years later and going back over their time together, this time as friends.

Hotel Margarita

Hotel Margarita is about hotels in General, I have a fascination with them. Always have. This one Is loosely based on one in Knoxville that I stayed in. The song Is based around a fella who is up to divilment away from home. With a barmaid perhaps.

Chelsea Bards

Chelsea Bards Is dedicated to the great Stanley Bard, One time owner of the Chelsea Hotel. I wrote this song the first time we ever went to NYC and stayed in the Chelsea, It was also featured on the flipside of our Back DIsco the 7″. That time it was recorded by a drunk Stef and myself in room 325 of the hotel, This time features beautiful piano by Rachel Caffery

Flamingo Chip

Flamingo Chip is about Las Vegas. The Flamingo is the oldest Casino/Hotel on the Strip and where I had my first taste of a bit of Gambling which won me 60 Dollars. I spent all of it on a cab journey where I asked a Taxi driver to drive me to the maddest Bar she knows off the strip. After 5 or 6 empty bars he just dropped me to my hotel, me not realising that It was in fact 9 in the morning !! All sense of time and place goes in this crazy Kip. Our best time was spent in the old part of Vegas called Freemont Street where they serve big cocktails on the street in American football shape and size containers.

Pecan Street

Pecan Street is the old name for Sixth Street in Austin Texas. I love Austin and the Word Pecan so Its the perfect title.

The song itself was originally called Custers last one night stand, which is stupid so I changed it. Its about a Dalliance between a wandering minstrel and a local Gal :)

Knoxville Morning

Knoxville Morning is about wandering through a housing estate in Knoxville with the sun beating down about 5 days into the trip, I can remember just being in great form as we had already had an amazing few days and there was so much of it still to go! We had stayed in an apartment with Vetinary students and the house was full of animals, Thats where the line “Knoxvilles noahs ark” comes from. This song just wrote itself and It seemed like the perfect title for the whole thing.

Lighthouse Song

Lighthouse song is a song about a lover of Whales, Lighthouses, Viscounts and Murder she wrote.

Loyola

Loyola is a college in New Orleans. Where I went to see a Volleyball game one time.

Virginia is for Lovers

Virginia is for lovers is about the very first time we all went to America together and stayed in Winchester Va.

We played a sold out gig in this mad kip called Dungbeetles bar, which was run by a load of young lads who sold drugs and pimped hookers out of the bar.

The Doorman once knocked a mans glass eye out of his head with a box! It was our first taste of the big time :)

Trumpets

Trumpets has a Thin Lizzy style TRIPLE Harmony guitar part at the end of it. That is all that needs to be said about this jam. There’s probably something to do with sex in there too.

Tulsa

Tulsa (The Middle of Everywhere) This Isnt necessarily about Tulsa itself but its about that thing that everyone does (Well I do) where you are away somewhere and you just write the hotel and street on your hand or on a card, because you know full well that youll be far too drunk to have any idea how to get back at 5 in the morning! Its a song of exploring a town, especially the spots that only make sense to you, like your favourite musicians local or where Bob Dylan used to buy Jacks Roll! Those spots.
